Should Wisdom Teeth Extractions Cause Infection?

Your Painless Wisdom Tooth May Be Hiding Something!

Many people often ask me why they should go through wisdom teeth extractions if they aren’t experiencing any pain. Why you may not feel any pain now, there could be problems lurking that you know nothing about.

It’s impossible to know when an acute infection will strike or how much pain it will cause. And sense stress is known to trigger a wisdom tooth issue, the pain may happen at the worst, most inconvenient time possible. In fact, many parents contact me for help right after their children leave for college. This can be a stressful time for many high school graduates and they release stress hormones. These steroids can decrease immunity and cause them to have pain from their wisdom teeth which they didn’t feel previously.

Why should you have wisdom teeth extractions before the pain arrives?

While it can be a nuisance to have wisdom teeth extractions done when there are other, important things going on in your life, there are several other reasons to see your oral surgeon before the pain begins.

First, pain in your teeth probably means that an infection is present. There is no way of knowing if the infection is there unless you see your doctor who can look carefully at your teeth with x-rays and other procedures to see what’s happening in your mouth.

Second, if you wait to have your wisdom teeth extracted until they’re acutely infected and causing pain, the recovery process will be more difficult.

Third, if you wait for wisdom teeth extractions until you feel pain and have an infection, the costs for treatment will rise. Specifically, if an infection reaches the point that it starts forming pus, the pus can extend to other locations and collect between the cheek and gum tissue and the bone of the jaw. When this happens, the area needs to be opened and drained, which can add to the cost of the surgical procedure as well as the pain and time involved for recovery!

You cannot ignore a tooth infection!

If you wait to have your wisdom teeth removed and have an infection, the pain will continue to increase. Even worse, in some cases, the infection can be life-threatening!

This is because there is a pathway in that region of the body that allows for pus to go directly into the neck, which will quickly become a life-threatening emergency. Fortunately, this is not a typical occurrence, and it’s not my intention to be an alarmist. However, I do need to be truthful as well as medically responsible by informing people of the possibilities and the cases I’ve dealt with during my time in public hospitals.
