Corrective Jaw Surgery

Orthognathic surgery refers to corrective jaw surgery to fix bite problems or the alignment of teeth caused by dental or skeletal irregularities. Dr. Babiuk offers the most up-to-date procedures to correct any orthodontic with the teeth and jaws.

Jaw surgery may be recommended for a large array of dental or oral problems:

  • TMJ pain or headaches

  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing food

  • Underbites or overbites

  • Open bite

  • Cleft palate or other congenital defects

  • Protruding jaw

  • Receding chin

  • Facial trauma

  • Unbalanced facial features due to bone structure

  • Sleep apnea

Other conditions can be corrected by realigning the bony structures of the jaw and the teeth. Orthodontic treatments (braces) may be needed along with surgical intervention. The treatment plan for the patient’s individual needs will be determined with a thorough examination and advanced digital imaging.

Dr. Babiuk will be following closely and monitoring all phases of treatment and recovery. The end result will improve many aspects of life for the patient.

Most oral surgeries are performed inside the mouth, eliminating any scars on the face or chin. Depending on the type of surgery needed, metal appliances on the bones or rubber bands may be needed to stabilize the correct positions. Some jaw surgeries can require bone grafts to enhance bone structures over time.

Some patients suffer from improper bite caused by misaligned teeth and jaw. At our office, corrective jaw surgery can provide relief for patients who experience difficulty chewing, swallowing and have chronic jaw or joint pain due to this misalignment. Corrective jaw surgery can also improve problems with breathing and snoring related to sleep apnea.

Before corrective jaw surgery, orthodontic braces are used to move the teeth into a new position. The oral surgeon then repositions the patient’s jaw during surgery while the patient is under general anesthesia. Surgery may take from one to several hours depending on the patient’s needs. In some cases patients may experience an enhanced physical appearance after surgery due to the correction of a receding chin or protruding jaw.
