On Sunday, October 13, 2024, thousands of participants from all 50 states and over 100 countries will arrive in Chicago to take part in The 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. And while so many people will actually be at the event, even more will benefit from the race. Why? It’s a big fundraiser for Smile Train, Inc., https://www.smiletrain.org, an organization that is close to my heart.
You see, when I was 11 years old, I watched a PBS video about a boy born in a developing nation who was born with a serious facial abnormality. The boy faced many challenges growing up with abnormalities in his upper and lower jaw. Then, he had oral surgery, and he saw major, positive changes in his appearance and function.
His results affected me significantly as I never knew how detrimental jaw and teeth disorders could be… and that they could be helped through oral surgery. Because of this program, I realized that my purpose in life was to become an oral surgeon so that I could help patients just like this boy.
Today, I’m an oral and maxillofacial surgeon known as TheWisdomToothDoc™ who has helped thousands of patients, taught oral surgery and outpatient anesthesia to residents in training at Cook County/Stroger Hospital in Chicago, wrote the book, “What Every Parent of an Adolescent Needs to Know About Opioids,” and has been in practice for over 25 years with 29-plus years of anesthesia experience. I’m very grateful for that initial PBS program that inspired me to have such a fulfilling career, and I’m very proud of my daughter, Miranda. Why, you might ask? Let me tell you…
Miranda will be running in the Chicago Marathon to raise money for Smile Train. Since 1999, this organization has offered the training, funding, and resources that empower local doctors in 75+ countries to provide 100%-free cleft care in their own communities.
Did you know that 1 in 700 babies are born with a cleft lip and/or palate globally? Clefts cause difficulties eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking. Because of Smile Train, many children with these challenges receive lifesaving surgeries and essential cleft care 100%-free in their own communities.
This is why I’m so proud of my daughter for helping out. If you would like to help her cause, you can learn more here.
If would like more information, please let me know. Also, look for a new promotion to help support Miranda coming up soon.
